THE ART OF COMMUNICATION

According to Ted Haggard and John Bolin, there are five keys to conversation:

  1. Stand up straight, look them in the eye, and smile. A warm, confident greeting communicates acceptance and responsibility.
  2. Respond with confidence – don’t mutter. When we meet a person who has the confidence to speak to us clearly with sparkling eyes and a warm grin, we immediately connect with them.
  3. Learn people’s names and use their names properly. Learning to use people’s names with respect and courtesy is fundamental to basic conversation.
  4. Develop a general knowledge base. Versatility in conversation is invaluable. With a general understanding of politics, entertainment, sports, and religion you’ll be amazed at the depth of conversation and friendships that will emerge.
  5. Focus on the other person. Many people fail at conversation simply because they are too interested in fronting their own point of view. They don’t want to talk to someone – they want to talk at someone.
  1. What's your name?
  2. Where do you live?
  3. Tell me about your family.
  4. What do you do?
  5. Do you like to travel?
  6. What sports do you like?
  7. Ideas?
  8. PFC?
  9. What are your goals in life?
